Endowed Scholarship Listing

  • Below is a listing of the Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation's endowed scholarships, this listing will be updated in the fall of 2011 for the 2012 application process.

     

    New Scholarships in 2012

    Glazer Family Jewish Studies Scholarships: Made possible through the generosity of the Glazer family 3 scholarships of $5,000 are offered to SAM undergraduates who are pursuing Jewish studies majors or minors, with preference to Indiana Univ. (Sigma Zeta) students.

     

    Gary Gotlieb Scholarship: Created in memory of Gary Gotlieb (Texas '86), this $1000 scholarship is for members of the Sigma Theta chapter with financial need who are active in the chapter in the role of Social or Rush chair and have a 2.75 or higher GPA.

     

    Dennis Paese Scholarship: Has been endowed by Foundation Director and Beta chapter advisor Dennis Paese (Cornell '73) for Cornell (Beta) chapter fratres with financial need.

     

    Steve & Viviane Franklin Scholarship: Created by Foundation Director Steve Franklin (Houston '69) and his wife, this $500 scholarship will be awarded in 2012.

     

    Chief Justice Norman M. Krivosha Scholarship: Endowed by Norman Krivosha (Nebraska '54) who retired from the bench as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nebraska, this $1000 scholarship is for members in their 2nd or 3rd year of law school.

     

     

     

    GRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY:

     

    Samuel Miller Award :  This award is made in memory of Samuel Miller, CCNY '12, longtime Chairman of the SAM Endowment Fund and President of the SAM Foundation. 

    Criteria: Fratres engaged in original projects and experiments in science, scholarship, medicine or the creative arts.  Submit letter setting forth full details of the work being done or contemplated with supporting letters from supervisor, professor, or other expert, attesting to the quality, importance, validity and originality of the work in its field and how this grant would be used.

    Open To:  Graduate Students or alumni fratres

    Amount: $3000



    William Ober Memorial Scholarship (2 grants of $2,000 each):  This award was endowed by the late William Ober, CCNY ’26, who was a trustee of the Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation.

    Criteria:  Demonstrated financial need and a 3.5 GPA

    Open To:  Graduate Student fratres

    Amount: 2@ $2000 each

     

     

    Allan E. Miller Scholarship:  is named for the late Fra Allan E. Miller, Michigan ’32.

    Criteria:  Based on financial need

    Open To:  Graduate student fratres in any academic field.

    Amount: $500

     

     

    Dr. Lewis A. Hare Scholarship:  Fra Hare, Syracuse ’31, was a prominent Chicago internist. This award was endowed by his wife, Ruth, in his memory.

    Criteria:  Demonstrated financial need and good academic standing

    Open To:  Medical student with preference to Eta chapter.

    Amount: $2000

     

    Theda and Leonard Leventhal Scholarship:  endowed by Fra Leonard Leventhal, Oklahoma ’47.

    Criteria:  Based on financial need

    Open To:  Graduate student fratres in good standing that are Boy Scouts with proven Star, Life or Eagle status.

    Amount: $2000

     

     

    GRADUATE STUDENTS OR UNDERGRADUATES:

     

    Ira N. Lind Business Administration Scholarship:  Ira Lind, CCNY '12, a manufacturer, was a Founder of Sigma Alpha Mu and Supreme Prior; he created this fund to be used to aid fratres interested in making a career in business.

    Criteria: Based on need and academic achievement in one's major work.

    Open To: Fratres in an undergraduate or graduate school of business.

    Amount: $1500

     

    Raymond C. and Helen Sandler Scholarship:  This award is made in memory of former Foundation Trustee Raymond Sandler, Oklahoma '34 and his wife.  Fra Sandler was a lawyer from Los Angeles, CA.

    Criteria: Based on financial need, and a cumulative "B" average.

    Open to: Upperclassmen or graduate students

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    Hanno D. Mott Scholarship: This award is made in the name of Hanno D. Mott, Cincinnati '55, a former Supreme Prior who now serves as President of the SAM Foundation and trustee of the Endowment Fund, is a lawyer in New York City.

    Criteria:  "C" average and also actively involved in Jewish service activities

    Open To:  Seniors intending to go to law school, or current law students

    Amount:$1000

     

     

    Harvey Weisblat Aviation Scholarship: This award is made by Fra Harv Weisblat, Texas '67, who is a retired Continental Airlines pilot.

    Criteria: This is not a need-based scholarship, but need may be considered to determine a winner.  Financial information must be included.

    Open To: Undergraduate or Graduate Students, good scholastic standing and academically studying aviation or demonstrably seeking an aviation career, such as flying, maintenance, airport or aviation management, flight operations, aeronautical engineering, aviation publishing, air traffic control or other aviation-related fields.

    Amount:  $3000

     

     

    David D. Levinson Scholarship:  This award was made possible by Mrs. Joan Kauff, daughter of David D. Levinson who was one of the eight Founders of Sigma Alpha Mu.

    Criteria:  Based on need with an academic average sufficient, if maintained, to lead to a degree.  Preference given to those applicants who are challenged or disabled in some way. The nature of the disability is to be described and documentation included.  Open To:  Undergraduate or Graduate Student frater other than freshmen

    Amount:  $1000

     

     

    Gormin Family Scholarships (2 grants):  This award is made by Gary P. Gormin, a past Supreme Prior and former Foundation trustee.

    Criteria:  demonstrated financial need with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 or equivalent, preparing for a career in law, medicine, dentistry, business or psychology.

    Open to:  Sophomores and above or graduate student fratres.

    Amount: 2 @ $1000 each

     

     

    Robert E. Kauff Memorial Scholarship:  This award is made possible by Mrs. Joan Kauff in memory of her son.  She is the daughter of David Levinson, one of the eight founders of Sigma Alpha Mu.

    Criteria:  demonstrated need with an academic average sufficient, if maintained, to lead to a degree and preference to those who have physical challenges, learning disabilities, or other special needs.  The nature of the disability is to be described and documentation included.

    Open to:  Undergraduate or graduate student members of Sigma Alpha Mu.

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    Warren and Esther Blumenfeld Humor Scholarship:  This award was established by Fra Blumenfeld, Indiana ’55, who was an author and professor.

    Criteria:  the award is given for an original work of humor, written or performed—play, short story, poem, book, standup comedy or TV routine or sketch, song, advertising piece, commercial, film or other creative endeavor.  Applicants should furnish the written work or, if applicable, a video portrayal.  (If the applicant has been paid for the work, that is positive but by no means necessary.) Please attach a link to the work on the scholarship application, if applicable. 

    Open To:  Undergraduate or Graduate Students whether fratres or children or grandchildren of fratres.

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    Sam Fox Scholarship:  was endowed by Fra Fox, Washington U. ’51.

    Criteria:  Proven financial need or merit, any academic major

    Open To:  Any undergraduate or graduate student frater with preference to Phi chapter

    Amount: $500

     

     

    Michael J. Weiss Memorial Scholarship:  was endowed by Foundation Trustee Robert S. Weiss, Sigma Alpha ’77 in memory of his brother, Michael J. Weiss, Sigma Alpha ’78.

    Criteria:  Based on financial need with a 3.0 GPA or above

    Open To:  Any graduate or undergraduate frater

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    Albert J. Kauff Memorial Scholarship:  was endowed by Mrs. Joan Kauff, daughter of David D. Levinson who was one of the eight Founders of Sigma Alpha Mu in memory of her husband.

    Criteria:  Based on need with an academic average sufficient, if maintained, to lead to a degree.  Preference given to those applicants who are challenged or disabled in some way.  The nature of the disability is to be described and documentation included.  Open To:  Undergraduate or Graduate Student frater other than freshmen

    Katch Family Scholarship:  was endowed by Foundation Treasurer and Past Supreme Prior Ronald S. Katch, Rho ’54.

    Criteria:  Proven financial need, overall GPA of 2.5/4.0 or better and an accounting major.

    Open To:  Junior or Senior Undergraduates or Graduate Students

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    Seymour D. Weiss Engineering Scholarship:  was endowed by Past Supreme Prior and Foundation director Seymour D. Weiss, Case Western Reserve ’56.

    Criteria:  “B” minimum grade point average.

    Open To:  Junior, Senior Undergraduates or Graduate Students with first preference to majors in Civil Engineering, Land Surveying and Mapping, or Environmental Engineering.

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    Wallach Associates, Inc. Scholarship: was endowed by Donald M. Wallach, Case Western Reserve ’56.

    Criteria:  Minimum “B” average and financial need limited to engineering, math, physics, operations research or computer science majors

    Open To:  initiated members in good standing

    Amount: $500

     

    Royal Flagg Jonas Scholarship:  was endowed by Royal Flagg Jonas, Alabama/Miami ’47 is a past Supreme Prior and former Foundation director and Endowment Fund trustee.

    Criteria:  Student frater in good standing based on worth and need

    Open To:  Sophomores and higher and grad students.

    Amount: $1000

     

    Groot Gregory Scholarship

    Criteria: Graduate or undergraduate fratres from any chapter

    Open To: An optics or optical engineering major or graduate student or physics if no optics can be found.

    Amount: $500

     

     

     

    UNDERGRADUATES ONLY:

     

    James C. Hammerstein Scholarships (2 grants):  This award is made in memory of Jimmy Hammerstein, CCNY '19, the Fraternity's Executive Secretary for 28 years.

    Criteria: Based primarily on need, but applicants must have a scholastic average sufficient, if maintained, to lead to a baccalaureate degree.

    Open To: Undergraduate Fratres in good standing

    Amount: 2 @ $2000 each

     

    Nate Karchmer Scholarship: These awards are made in memory of Fra Nate Karchmer, Oklahoma '28, a pipe and steel broker who also was a Consul and Foundation trustee.

    Criteria: Based primarily on need, but applicants should have a good academic average, one at least sufficient to earn a degree if maintained.

    Open To: Juniors and Seniors Only in good standing

    Amount: $2500

     

    The Ben Savage Scholarship:  This award is made in memory of Fra Ben Savage, Syracuse '20.  Fra Savage was a long-time chapter advisor, Regional Governor and Consul and received the first Outstanding Advisor Award.

    Criteria:  Based primarily on need and fraternity interest, although academic average will be considered.

    Open To:  Undergraduate Fratres in good standing

    Amount: $500

     

    Martin E. Sherman Scholarship:  This award is made in memory of Fra Martin E. Sherman, Missouri '58.

    Criteria:  Based on need and a "B" average is required.

    Open To:  Undergraduate fratres other than freshmen who are in good standing

    Amount: $500


    Sidney H. Guller Scholarship (two grants):  These awards are made in the name of Past Supreme Prior Sid Guller, Washington U. `45, Chairman of the Sigma Alpha Mu Endowment Fund, a Foundation Director, and a past president of the N.I.C. 

    Criteria: Based on financial need; a cumulative "B" average is also required.

    Open To:  Undergraduate fratres other than freshmen who are in good standing

    Amount;  2 @ $1000 each

     

     

    Preston Robert Tisch Scholarship:  This award is made in memory of Bob Tisch, Bucknell-Michigan `43, who is a former Postmaster General of the United States and co-chairman of Loew's Inc.

    Criteria:  Based primarily on need; a 2.5/4.0 average (or the equivalent) is required.

    Open To:  Sophomore, junior and senior fratres in good standing

    Amount: $3000

     

    Terry Semel Scholarship:  This award is made in the name of Terry Semel, LIU '64, Foundation director and our 1992 Man of the Year who was co-chairman of Warner Brothers Studios and former CEO of Yahoo!

    Criteria:  Based on need and fraternity activity.  Requires a "C" average.

    Open To:  Current and former Chapter Officers who are in good standing

    Amount: $1000

     

    Milken Family Scholarship:  This award is made available through the generosity of Michael R. Milken, Berkeley '68. 

    Criteria:  Based on need.  An education major with a "B" average.

    Open To:  Sophomores or above who are in good standing

    Amount :$1500

     

     

    Bill Schwartz Scholarship (two grants):  are in honor of the exemplary service of William P. Schwartz, executive director emeritus of Sigma Alpha Mu.

    Criteria:  Based on financial need and grades at  4-year degree-granting institutions.  Application must be accompanied by a letter from the applicant, and also from the father, if he is living.

    Open To:  Daughters (natural or adopted) of fratres, including those of deceased fratres; or fratres returned to school to complete their undergraduate degree.

    Amount: 2 @ $2000 each

     

    Martin and Howard Miller Scholarship:  This award is made by the contribution of Past Supreme Prior Howard Miller, Maryland '58, his late father, Martin K. Miller, Illinois '30, a past Supreme Exchequer.

    Criteria:  Based on need.  Individual must currently or previously have exercised a leadership position in his chapter.

    Open To:  Sophomores or above who are in good standing

    Amount: $1000

     

    Sonia Brown Memorial Scholarship:  This award is made in memory of the Sigma Alpha (Oklahoma) housemother for 22 years.

    Criteria:  Based on financial need and worth; academic average will be considered.

    Open To:  Sophomores or above in good standing

    Amount :$500

     

     

    Donald Stein Legacy Scholarship: This award is made possible by the contribution of Donald J. Stein, Purdue '53, a Foundation Director and board member of the Sigma Eta House Corporation.

    Criteria:  Based on financial need with a 2.25 minimum GPA

    Open To:  Sophomores or Juniors with preference to members of Big Ten SAM chapters and  initiated sons of fratres who are in good standing.

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    Paul A. Pumpian Scholarship:  This scholarship was endowed by the late Paul Pumpian, Maryland ’48, a former Consumer Affairs Officer for the U.S. Small Business Administration.

    Criteria:  Based on demonstrated need with a GPA of 3.0/4 or equivalent

    Open To:  any undergraduate frater in good standing

    Amount: $2000 

     

     

    Karchmer Family Scholarship:  This scholarship was endowed by the Karchmer Family of Oklahoma.

    Criteria:  Based on need and fraternity involvement

    Open To:  Undergraduate frater in good standing of any chapter

    Amount: $500

     

     

    Manuel Leve Scholarship:  Endowed by the Sigma Eta (Purdue) House Corporation in memory of Manuel Leve, Purdue ’28, its long-time chairman, for his contributions to the Fraternity.

    Criteria:  Demonstrated financial need, fraternity interest and 3.0 GPA

    Open To:  Undergraduate frater in good standing, sophomore and above

    Amount: $500

     

     

    Honigberg Scholarship, endowed by Fra Joel D. Honigberg, Sigma Eta/Phi ’47.

    Criteria:  3.5/4.0 GPA, but need and motivation will be considered for those applicants with less than 3.5

    Open To:  Undergraduate junior or senior fratres majoring in chemistry, physics, biochemistry, biogenetics, engineering physics, nuclear physics, biophysics, astronomy, geology or mathematics, who are planning on attending graduate school in their major field.

    Amount: $500

     

     

    September 11 Scholarship: was created by the Trustees of the SAM Foundation in memory of those fratres who were killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

    Criteria:  Based on worth and need

    Open To:  Any undergraduate frater

    Amount: $500

     

     

    Michael Karl Memorial Scholarship:  This scholarship was endowed by the Gamma Pi alumni in memory of Michael L. Karl, Gamma Pi ’92, who died of cancer at age 24.

    Criteria:  Demonstrated financial need, acceptable GPA and commitment to chapter

    Open To:  Sophomores or above, with preference to Gamma Pi chapter.

    Amount: $500

     

     

    Weiss Brothers Scholarship:  was endowed by Fra Robert S. Weiss, Oklahoma ’77, who is a Foundation Trustee.

    Criteria:  Financial need and worth

    Open To:  Daughters of fratres who are undergraduates at a 4-year college or university.

    Amount: $1000

     

    Marc P. Schwartz Scholarship:  was endowed by Fra Marc Schwartz, USC ’90.

    Criteria:  Financial need and minimum GPA of 3.0 in any major; preference to Mu Theta chapter

    Open To:  Any undergraduate

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    S. David Coleman Scholarship:  is in memory of Judge S. David Coleman, Utah/Harvard ’21, by his Los Angeles fratres.

    Criteria:  Based on need with a “B” GPA.

    Open To:  Preference to California fratres who are sophomores and above.

    Amount: $500

     

    Grace Bender Scholarship:  was endowed by Sigma Alpha Mu alumni in honor of the late Grace Bender, SAM’s longtime bookkeeper and office manager.

    Criteria:  Demonstrated financial need, 2.5/4.0 GPA

    Open To:  Any undergraduate frater, sophomore or above

    Amount: $500

     

     

    Benjamin P. Goldman Scholarship: is in memory of Past Supreme Prior Goldman, Cornell ’14.

    Criteria:  “B” average and show evidence of leadership and oratorical ability and need.

    Open To:  Graduating seniors accepted to an accredited law school.

    Amount: $500

     

     

    Leslie and Bobbi Raffel Scholarship: was endowed by Fra Leslie J. Raffel, Purdue ’63.

    Criteria:  Engineering student in good academic standing.

    Open To:  Any undergraduate frater, sophomore or above

    Amount: $2000

     

     

    Jack and Sara Freeman Scholarship:  is in memory of Past Supreme Prior Jack Freeman, Washington ’31.

    Criteria:  “B” average or better and financial need.

    Open To:  Sophomores or above undergraduates

    Amount: $500

     

     

    John C. Ale Scholarship:  was endowed by Past Supreme Recorder John C. Ale, Virginia ’76.

    Criteria:  Financial Need

    Open To:  Undergraduates with preference to students at schools in the South and Southwest.

    Amount: $500

     

     

    Margolis-Epps Scholarship:  was endowed by Fra Nathan Margolis, North Texas ’75.

    Criteria:  “C” average and demonstrated financial need.

    Open To:  Full-time undergraduate frater who is active in his chapter.

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    James E. and Elsie B. Rasbold Scholarship:  was endowed by Fra J. Charles Rasbold, Case Western Reserve ’83, in memory of his parents.

    Criteria:  Engineering, Science and Mathematics major, academic achievement will be considered as may chapter activity.

    Open To:  Undergraduate Fraters, sophomores or above.

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    Judy Schwartz Scholarship:  in memory of Judy Schwartz, wife of Executive Director Emeritus Bill Schwartz.

    Criteria:  Based on need and worth, and academic average will be considered.

    Open To:  Sophomores or above.

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    Deana and Gerald Stempler Scholarship:  endowed by the Stempler Family Foundation.

    Criteria:  frater in good standing with accredited institution and with the Fraternity.

    Open To:  Sophomores or above.

    Joseph Dave Memorial Scholarship:  was endowed by the family of the late Joseph Dave, Cincinnati ’23, a trustee of the SAM Foundation and Certificate of Merit winner.

    Criteria:  Civil Engineering major

    Open To:  Juniors or Seniors

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    Robert Traum Scholarship:  endowed by Robert Traum, LIU ’66.

    Criteria:  Any major with a C+ average or better.

    Open To:  sophomores or above

    Amount: $1000

     

    James R. Favor Scholarships: endowed by James R. Favor who is the insurance agent for the Fraternity’s liability insurance. Two awards, one to honor Bill Schwartz and Aaron Girson, Foundation Executive VP and one to honor Past Supreme Prior Dave Phillips and Consul member Andrew Dunsky for their service to Sigma Alpha Mu.

    Criteria:  Vice Prior or Risk Manager of chapter that has not had a risk violation in the past year with demonstrated risk management initiative and a 3.0 GPA.

    Open To:  member in good standing

    Amount: 2 @ $2000 each

     

     

    Joseph Weinberg Scholarship:  endowed by the late Joseph Weinberg, Rutgers ’38.

    Criteria:  demonstrated financial need and “B” average with preference to Sigma Delta chapter.

    Open To:  sophomores and above.

    Amount: $500

     

     

    Ronald Shlensky Memorial Scholarship:  was endowed by Herbert Jablin, Purdue ’56, in memory of a fellow Sigma Eta frater.

    Criteria:  a deserving frater with a “B” GPA

    Open To:  any undergraduate frater, sophomores and above

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    Leonard H. Smith Memorial Scholarship: was endowed in honor of Leonard H. Smith, Mu Theta ’48, a founding member of his chapter, by his son, Dr. Robert A. Smith, Mu Theta ’70 and his fellow Mu Theta fraters.

    Criteria:  Demonstrated financial need 

    Open To:  Undergraduate frater, sophomore and above, with preference to Mu Theta.

     

     

    Kenneth & Madeline Wolf Scholarship:  was endowed by Kenneth S. Wolf, Omicron ’65, who was a Regional Governor, Supreme Recorder and Foundation trustee.

    Criteria:  to pursue a graduate degree in the Fall with high academic qualifications and involved in campus activities.

    Open To:  Undergraduate Senior with preference to Omicron chapter.

    Amount: $1000

     

     

     

    Bora Laskin Scholarship: was endowed by ΣAM Foundation of Canada in memory of outstanding Canadian brother Bora Laskin (Toronto ’35)

    Criteria:  Financial need, good academic and fraternity standing, campus activities may be taken into account.

    Open To:  Preference to second year or above undergraduate Canadian frater attending either a Canadian or U.S. school.

    Amount: $1000

     

    Pauline & Albert Pattenick Scholarship: was endowed by ΣAM Foundation of Canada in memory of outstanding Canadian brother Bora Laskin (Toronto ’40) and his wife.

    Criteria:  Financial need, cumulative average sufficient, if maintained, to lead to a degree.

    Open To:  Preference to second year or above undergraduate Canadian frater attending either a Canadian or U.S. school

    Amount:$1000

     

    Samuel Gotfrid Scholarship: was endowed by ΣAM Foundation of Canada in memory of outstanding Canadian brother Samuel Gotfrid (Toronto ’29)

    Criteria:  Financial need, good academic record and good standing in the Fraternity; activities may be taken into account.

    Open To:  Preference to second year or above undergraduate Canadian frater attending either a Canadian or U.S. school.

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    Harold R. Stiefel Memorial Scholarship: was endowed by the fratres of the Bucknell chapter in memory of Harold Stiefel (Bucknell ’46) for his 3 decades of work as their advisor.

    Criteria:  Financial need, acceptable GPA, service to Fraternity, service to University      

    Open To:  Undergraduate fratres with preference to Sigma Phi chapter.

    Amount: $500

     

    Paul and Margie Alperson Scholarship: has been endowed by Paul Alperson (Nebraska ‘54 ) in memory of his parents

    Criteria: Good academic record and in good standing with the Fraternity

    Open To: Major or Minor in Jewish studies

    Amount: $500

     

    Ben Anderson Scholarship: was endowed by the Sigma Omega chapter (NC State) in memory of Ben Anderson and his dedication to the Fraternity and the chapter.

    Criteria:  Demonstrated financial need, minimum GPA of 2.7, chapter leadership and commitment

    Open To:  Undergraduate fratres, sophomores or above, with preference to Sigma Omega chapter.

    Amount: $1500

     

    Robert S. Elster Memorial Scholarship: has been endowed in memory of Robert S Elster, (Buffalo ’25) by his daughter Elizabeth and son in law Douglas Goldstein (NC State ’81)                                                          

    Criteria:  Demonstrated financial need, a minimum GPA of 2.8, exhibits leadership and dedication toward providing outstanding  community service to his local community.

    Open To:  Undergraduate fratres, sophomores or above, preference to Sigma Omega and Sigma Iota Chapters

    Amount: $1000

     

     

    Richie and Kevin Williamson Scholarship: Created in honor of ΣAM’s 75th Anniversary

    Criteria: GPA of at least 3.0 demonstrating financial need and participating in at least 2 non-fraternal activities.

    Open To: Undergraduate fratres.

    Amount: $1000

    Marshall M. Gelfand Scholarship

    Criteria:  Financial need, 2.5 GPA, Business/Management students with an accounting major.

    Open To:  Undergraduate fratres, sophomores or above, with preference to Eta chapter.

    Amount: $500

     

    Walter Rose Scholarship

    Criteria:  Demonstrated qualities of leadership and loyalty to Sigma                            

    Alpha Mu and Alma Mater

    Open To:  Undergraduate fratres of Eta, in good standing.

    Amount: $1000

    Theta Scholarship
